WRITING

Example Classification Topics

Americans can be divided into three groups--smokers, nonsmokers and that expanding pack of us who have quit. Those who have never smoked don't know what they're missing, but former smokers, ex-smokers, reformed smokers can never forget. We are veterans of a personal war, linked by that watershed experience of ceasing to smoke and by the temptation to have just one more cigarette. For almost all of us ex-smokers, smoking continues to play an important role in our lives. And now that it is being restricted in restaurants around the country and will be banned in almost all indoor public places in New York State starting next month, it is vital that everyone understand the different emotional states cessation of smoking can cause. I have observed four of them; and in the interest of science I have classified them as those of the zealot, the evangelist, the elect and the serene. Each day, each category gains new recruits."

“The Successful Student”
Writing a visual analysis is a fundamental part of almost every art history class. It sounds scary, but it's actually quite simple. A visual analysis is a description of what you see when you look at a work of art. This means writing about the formal elements and how they work together to create a composition. If you are familiar with most of the terms used to describe art, writing visual analysis is likely to be an easy process.

This essay was submitted by one of my students and is a good example of how to organize an informational process essay.  Keep in mind that an informational approach shows how something COULD happen.
This essay includes warnings for the reader.  These are important because you need to anticipate what could happen (positive or negative) and what questions the reader might have.  This author also makes good use of transitional words and phrases.  I have highlighted (in pink) some of these for you so that you can have a visual representation of how these are worked into the essay.
When I discuss this essay with students, they always comment on how realistic the examples are.  Take note of this and try to incorporate this “reality” element in your own writing.  This author did a good job of providing good supporting ideas for the main points.  One brainstorming technique that assists with this is to ask yourself the following questions about the examples that you present:  What are the results?  What is the importance?  If you answer these questions, then you will find that you are on your way to a well-developed essay.

Comparison  and  Contrast  Topics
Sexual  Harassment  in  the  Workplace
There are a variety of types of harassment that can occur in the workplace. Workplace harassment, whether it be verbal or physical badgering based on sex, religion, or race, is unlawful and also a form of discrimination.
Unwelcome, discriminatory conduct is legally considered harassment when it is bothersome enough to negatively impact the work environment. Also, if a supervisor’s harassment results in an obvious change in the employee’s salary or status, this conduct would be considered unlawful workplace harassment. Workplace harassment includes unwanted verbal or physical behavior regarding: Sex ,Gender,Gender Identity ,Religion ,Race ,Skin Color ,Sexual Orientation ,Physical or Mental Disability ,Age
Workplace harassment isn’t limited to sexual harassment, and doesn’t preclude same-gender harassment. Harassment can be about almost any personal characteristic, and between any two people - co-workers, managers, or even non-employees like clients, contractors, or vendors. The victim of harassment isn't necessarily the person who is the target of the harassment, but, can be anyone affected by the offensive behavior.

In addition to harassment occurring in the workplace, it can also take place during a job interview. During an interview, employers should not be asking about your race, gender, religion, marital status, age, disabilities, ethnic background, country of origin, sexual preferences or age. These are discriminatory questions, because they are not relevant to your abilities, skills, and qualifications to do the job.
